Tomorrow, 2/7/25 - live in Portland, ME - Czarna Wolgastar đź‘˝

Earthling Reader!

We interrupt this post-tour Orchestrotica debrief to bring you an urgent broadcast from Wolgastar I, now in orbit in the Sol system. The tour was great; but it's not every week there is an ALIEN BAND IN MAINE.

The Wolgastarians are back. And this time, they're doing a workshop in addition to joining with the bodies of 3 orchestrotica members to present their intergalactic balkan surf jazz in Portland, ME.

Live @ Mayo Arts - Fri, Feb 7, 2025

10 Mayo St
Portland, ME 04101 (Map)

Workshop @ 3–3:45pm ET

Uneven Waves: The Balkan Surf Jazz Sound
MSA will welcome Czarna Wolgastar to present an incredibly unique workshop that they call “Uneven Waves: The Balkan Surf Sound." With a low floor and high ceiling, the workshop will appeal to children over 10, as well as adults who have an interest in surf and musical fusion. During the workshop, Balkan music meets American jazz. Participants will go behind the rhythmic scenes with the alien and human members of Czarna Wolgastar to learn how they combine it all.

Concert @ 7pm ET

Czarna Wolgastar is an intergalactic balkan surf jazz trio. Whenever the space ship Wolgastar 1 returns to Earth, three non-corporeal Wolgastarian entities embody three members of Mr. Ho's Orchestrotica's quintet: Tev Stevig (guitar), Michael Harrist (bass), and Brian O'Neill (drums). Together, the trio – or sextet, depending on how you think of it – release a strange, other-worldly cocktail of Balkan beats and Milky-Way mischief crossed with the American songbook, Hollywood film soundtracks, and more.

Aloha everyone, I'm trying to take a little break from Orchestrotica stuff since wrapping up our tour a couple weeks ago and our super fun CW Trio concert in Portland, ME on the 7th. We're already in tour planning mode for 2026 too! Want to see some pics from tour, and behind the scenes? View the tour photo album. Today's dispatch is a guest post by long-time quintet member on cümbüş, oud, and resonator guitar Tev Stevig. Tev is also Czarna Wolgastar's arranger/composer/guitarist…and he's...

This is it! Our 2025 JazzRoad tour comes to an end later this afternoon 2/2 @ 4pm MT in Phoenix (Chandler). (Tickets) It's been a great run so far, and we've just departed Yuma, AZ as we head back east. (Surprisingly amazing breakfast at Cafecito by the way!) Then, for our New England fans, our intergalactic balkan surf jazz trio, Czarna Wolgastar is back! Wolgastar I is back in orbit on Feb 7th (this weekend) -- thanks to the recent planetary alignment that has created some killer surf...

What a show last night! Last night was, for me, our best quintet performance—ever—and we were stoked to share it with a full house, livestreamed it, and to have recorded the show for our upcoming EPK updates. Perhaps even more meaningful was the feedback afterwards—including a local who afterwards shared: "when I saw the band name on Alva's website.....I had low expectations....this was the best concert I've ever seen!" Maybe it was because there was a Crazy Al sighting (and assistance, thx...
