Hi Reader, After a rainy and hot 4th of July that thankfully turned my outdoor Fenway Brass concert in Newport, RI into an indoor, air-conditioned concert, I’m switching modes to work with the new-to-me Boston Festival Orchestra this week. It’s my first time with the group, and I was excited to find out they were performing Christopher Tin’s large work, The Drop That Contained the Sea (YouTube link), which features multiple vocal soloists singing in 10 languages and Chorus Pro Musica—all led by Alyssa Wang, conductor. Why go? Well, I don’t get to play tabla and frame drum much with orchestra—which is probably a good thing for the rest of the orchestra—but I’m looking forward to diving in and playing some groove! Will I crash and burn? Maybe.
